Promenade leading to the pier in Brzeźno — “Path of the Senses”

Description

The competition concept for redeveloping and revitalising the Brzeźno pier promenade in Gdańsk is built around the idea of a “Path of the Senses”, with each zone assigned a different sense. The entrance zone on Czarny Staw Street works with sight: timber pergolas recalling Brzeźno’s 19th-century pergolas, gardens on mounds, insect hotels and a path with Braille information. The food zone is taste: canopies with counters for local vendors, an orchard of old plum, apple and cherry varieties, fruit bushes and herbs. The relaxation zone is smell: seating, hammocks, deckchairs and timber structures for unwinding among Meyer’s lilac and sweet mock orange. The beachside active recreation zone is hearing and touch — a playground with trampolines, a stage, an outdoor gym, swings hung beneath a pergola and sound installations: chimes, a dendrophone, whooshing pipes and a megaphone, supporting the development of children with sensory processing disorders. A “barefoot path” with changing surfaces of sand, stones, bark and stumps ties everything together. The fish-inspired path layout combines straight lines with rounded forms. Pavilions are lightweight timber frames with green roofs and white finishes, pedestrian and cycle surfaces are mineral and permeable, and planting follows the “new perennials” approach. The cycle route is separated from the footpath, and rainwater is used in the toilets by the entrance square.
